A total of twenty people were asked ten questions in the following survey. Their responses are integrated below.
- What do you think of when you hear the word surreal?
The majority responded with synonyms for weird: dream-like, unreal, bizarre, distorted, beyond reality, etc.
Three expressed a very personal idea:
"The back door to an artist's brain"
"A black house with a broken window"
"Seeing beauty in the face of grief"
- 2. In what decade of the 20th century did the Surrealists come to prominence?
1930s = 50% 1940s = 10% 1950s = 10% 1960s = 20% (No Response = 10%)
(The correct answer was the 1930s.)
- What strikes you most when you first see a painting - its sentiment or its technique?
Sentiment = 65% Technique = 25% (Both = 5%, Neither = 5%)
- When you read fiction how much information do you find the author gives you?
Too Little = 0% Enough = 65% Too Much = 25% (No Response = 10%)
- Do events inspire you more than emotions?
Yes = 50% No = 50%
- Can you name any artists, writers or filmmakers that might be considered Surrealists?
The most common answers were (in order of repetitions): Salvador Dali, David Lynch, Tom Robbins, Pablo Picasso, André Breton, Luis Buñuel.
Notable and unexpected responses were: John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Steven Spielberg, Mario Vargas Llosa, Margaret Atwood, Jeunet et Caro.
- What adjectives would you use to describe their work?
The majority responded with visual adjectives: distorted, swirly, alien, dream-like, gory, unrecognizable, dark.
Notable personal interpretations were: mind fuck, multi-layered, unimaginable, insightful, quirky, to perceive beyond.
- In considering art, fiction or film, are you more attracted to recognizable objects or abstract ideas?
Recognizable Objects = 45% Abstract Ideas = 50% (No response = 5%)
- Does it interest you to examine your dreams?
Yes = 85% No = 15%
- Do you think the subconscious plays a valuable role in our everyday lives?
Yes = 95% No = 5%
